With a tight deadline and a redesign under way, I came into this project in the middle of it as a freelance Senior Art Director. Design work was split with two other Art Directors, so keeping visual consistency was going to be key.
Our process was very agile, working systematically through a backlog of stories. We had standard rituals – daily standups, biweekly reviews and retros – in order to assure visual consistency. We worked closely with the UX Designers off of their wireframes to ensure the visuals would match their intent.
Along with touching many of the interface screens, one of my biggest contributions was creating these widget designs, which would populate the main player dashboard and provide player stats and feedback.
Overall it was probably the most efficient working process I’ve ever experienced, which made the experience enjoyable despite going through a couple redesigns.
The site launched to great fanfare, with a high subscriber base. The game itself would break sales records to become the one of the best selling games of all time and the best selling game in the franchise at the time.
